The last post here is dated February 18, 2021. It was a perfectly ordinary how-to about Bitbucket permissions, and nothing about it suggested it would be the last one for five and a half years. There was no farewell post, no “taking a break” announcement. The blog just — stopped.
This post is the missing announcement, written from the other side.
What happened #
The short version: life kept running, and the writing habit didn’t.
- we moved - again, we left Spain and now we’re living (again) in Bratislava, Slovakia
- my journey inside the company I cofounded (Thinknostic => Thinkwrap) ended with its acquisition by Tenzing. I stayed a few more years in a DevOps / Platform role, left in 2024
- I changed my priorities and my focus in many areas of life quite significantly
- I created a single-man consulting company - Klassify and started to pick interesting assignments, preferably short term / part time ones
- finally, after many years I started to dedicate a significant amount of my time to my hobbies and personal projects
The side effect of the last two items is that I have now almost unrestricted freedom to write about things I am working on and playing with. No more locked-in Confluence posts, IP-barred solutions and self-imposed censorship :-)
Some of these (maybe) deserve a more detailed post, which I (maybe) will get to in the catching-up series.
The world moved too #
The gap happens to bracket the strangest shift of my professional life. When the last post went out in 2021, my toolkit was the classic DevOps/cloud stack, and “AI” mostly meant a category of conference talks. Writing this in 2026, a large language model helped resurrect the very site you are reading — the dormant Hugo build, the 550-post WordPress-era archive, the theme, the publishing pipeline. That story deserves its own post; the point here is that the person writing in 2026 works in a noticeably different world than the one who stopped in 2021.
Since 2025, LLMs and especially Claude have become an integral part of my work, hobbies, life, and everyday activities. I remember that in 2016 or ‘17, when I did the previous upgrade and porting of this blog, it took 2 or 3 weeks until I got it working in Hugo. And fine-tuning for many more weeks as I discovered problems, issues, here and there. This time it took less than 2 hours, and my participation was mostly making decisions and confirming or providing additional details - Claude did all the heavy lifting. I resisted the temptation to “fix” my imperfect grammar, weird language constructs in the past entries, so everything from the past stays as it was written by a human without any AI involvement. I don’t plan to use Claude or any other LLMs to generate articles - there is too much AI slop out there anyway, and this is mostly interesting for me or for the very few people that know me.
What I definitely want to do is to use Claude to review them and help me to make them sound a little bit better while still preserving my style.
Where I am now #
The living version of “where am I now” has its own page: /now. That page gets updated; this post stays frozen as the marker between the two eras of this blog.
What this blog becomes #
Two things change with the restart:
- Short notes are now first-class. There is a new Notes stream for things that are worth writing down but not worth an essay — TILs, links, half-thoughts. The long-form posts continue when there is something long-form to say.
- The archive stays. All 555 posts back to 2006 remain exactly where they are, WordPress-era formatting warts and all. They are the record.
The gap years may get backfilled with a few posts under the catching-up tag — what changed in the tools, in the work, in the reading — written when one of them wants to be written, not on a schedule.
Mostly this is for future me. But if someone else is reading: welcome back — I’m back too.
