The pitch I once wrote for a conference talk still says it best: Obsidian has a cult following “not because it’s clever software, but because of what it isn’t: your notes are just plain markdown files in a folder on your computer. No database, no cloud lock-in, no proprietary format. Just files.” Nothing ages as well as plain text; it has been the same since, well, files were invented. Markdown is just a very thin layer that gives the plain text some structure, and allows it to be rendered and displayed in an aesthetically pleasing way.

I have always taken notes. At first on paper - there are still many handwritten notebooks somewhere in the archives - but for the last thirty years or so most of them, if not all, have been digital. And digital always means an application and a format. I have tried a lot of them. While doing so I made pretty much every mistake one can make when it comes to choosing an application and settling on a workflow. What follows is a tour of the graveyard: a long line of tools, most of them now dead, and the lesson each one charged me on the way out.

Cybersource Testing Tool # Java utility that we used before when we were debugging the TLS 1.2 issues. I have recently picked very interesting book that I have read about year ago, from Mike Gunderloy named Coder to Developer, with subtitle Tools and Strategies for Delivering Your Software. It is an excellent book and I highly recommend to give it a look if you are in software development business on Microsoft platform. Easy read, practical, useful.When I was reading it back in 2006, it was before we have set up own development lab and started the biometric project. With this recent experience, I was re-reading the book with quite different view: unlike before, I knew what we tried, what worked and what did not. Unlike before, I have now broader experience with what it means developing software and run large project inside the organization, creating and maintaining infrastructure for team of developers and leading the project design and implementation.

Today's extension provides easy way how to access and add content to great free service from Google - Google Notebook. I am using it for over 3 months now and find it very useful and easy to use. As other Google product, Google Notebooks is simple, has clean interface and not too many features. The extension available from Google tools for Firefox make using it even easier. It allows you to create notes - Web clippings, by selecting part of Web page and choosing "Note this (Google Notebook)" from context menu, selection is added to currently active notebook.

I found today something that (after long time) make me to say Wow! - and it had nothing to do with Apple or OS-X. Simple small system management utility for Windows modestly named System info, written by fellow Canadian Gabriel Topala (originally from Romania, but living in Toronto, as I found out from his resume on his web site). So what is so fantastic about this program: - it is small (single file, 1.3 MB) - portable no installer required - free (although author welcomes donations and encourages registration) - amazing depth.
