I had an opportunity to attend DockerCon 2018 in person - it was great experience in wonderful city - Barcelona. My notes from it are here. I missed previous year (for variety of reasons), but DockerCon this year (as many other tech events) was purely virtual so I was able to see some part of it.

Compared to 2018, the general tone and content of this DockerCon was quite different. In 2018 it felt like all the attention is focused on big enterprise (mainly Microsoft related) and what Docker as a company is looking for best way how to hook big firms with deep pockets.

AWS Summit Madrid

One day round trip Valencia to Madrid and back.

It is 350 km, but AVE (high velocity train) makes it in 1.5 hr. Take that, Via Rail !!

Travelling at 300 km/h is unreal. It is actually quieter and more smooth than Canadian train at 80 - all that makes the speed believable is the velocity display and view out of the window when train goes around something closer to the rails.

DockerCon 2018 - great event (with a small fly in the ointment)

I have just returned from DockerCon Europe 2018 and I’d like to share my impressions while they are fresh in my mind. It was my first DockerCon so I was not quite sure what to expect.
As the title says, it was great experience and barring the scaling issue (more below) could have been really awesome experience.

But let’s take things in order. First location - Barcelona. Hard to pick better place in December than Spain. I am sure the Northerners greatly appreciated the break from cold and enjoyed the balmy 15 to 20 degrees. The venue Centre de Convencions Internacional de Barcelona - CCIB - though not located in the centre, is at the shore and one can walk to the beach in 2-3 minutes. There were three of us going from Valencia office (which is 3 hours train ride down the coast from Barcelona) and we had also great hotel experience. I can highly recommend Hotel Princess Barcelona. What can be better than starting your day with watching sunrise over Mediterranean Sea. Thanks David - because you did such a great job, you are now in charge of travel and hotel booking going forward :-D

As I mentioned yesterday, my expectations regarding Office 2007 were fairly low. I am not a big fan of office application suites and for most of my editing I am using either on-line tools (like Google docs or Writeboard) or Open Office. True, neither of them has the smoothness and fine polish of Microsoft Office 2003, neither has all of it's features, but - let's face it - I barely use maybe 10-20% of Word or Excel capabilities anyway. For which reason, I am not willing to pay premium just for improved user comfort.

Ready for a new day - or Vista-Office-Exchange launch

Today was a big day in Ottawa Microsoft community. The Congress Centre was hosting large event - simultaneous launch of Windows Vista, Office 2007 and Exchange server 2007. Because I have almost registered about two months ago, I attended the event. The "almost" means that I tried to register right after receiving MSDN Flash email, but many people must have been faster - I was put on waiting list on two of the 3 tracks (Developers and IT Pros) and before I could even try to register for the third track (Business), everything crashed, Web site hang and I have never heard back from them, nor received any email. Until yesterday, when an automated voice reminder service managed to catch me by phone in underground garage under Brookstreet Hotel, and delivered first part of reminder - telling me that I was registered to attend something ... Too bad it did not tell me to what, when and where did I registered, before it broke off and I lost the signal. But I deducted that the only reason to call me would be a reminder of the Launch and after logging on to My Events, voila - the ticket was there. So I went. It was a tough decision, whether to sacrifice full work day and possibly evening ping-pong at Igor's - but - what the heck. Microsoft does not produce new releases that often so going away once in 5 years should be OK. And now I am glad I did go.
